Gumroad vs Payhip fees

Gumroad and Payhip both let creators sell digital products and memberships, but they price it in fundamentally different shapes. Gumroad is a flat percentage with no subscription; Payhip is a tiered plan where paying a monthly fee buys down your transaction percentage.

Gumroad: flat 10%, no plan

Every direct Gumroad sale costs a flat 10% + $0.50, all-inclusive — Gumroad is the Merchant of Record, so card processing and sales tax are already inside that rate rather than stacked on top like Payhip's free plan. You pay nothing monthly, so the rate is identical whether you make one sale or a thousand. (Rate checked against gumroad.com/pricing in August 2026 — verify current rates.)

Payhip: pay monthly to lower the percentage

Payhip has historically offered three tiers: a free plan with a ~5% transaction fee, a Plus plan with a lower fee for a fixed monthly cost, and a Proplan with 0% Payhip transaction fees for a higher monthly cost. Payment processing applies separately on every tier. The model is “trade a subscription for a smaller cut.” (Verify current Payhip pricing before relying on these numbers.)

The crossover point

Because Payhip's monthly fee is fixed, the more you sell, the more sense its paid tiers make. There's a revenue threshold where the percentage Gumroad takes exceeds Payhip's monthly subscription plus its reduced (or zero) transaction fee.

  • Low volume / just starting: Gumroad's no-subscription model is simpler and cheaper — you never pay for a plan you don't earn back.
  • High, steady volume: Payhip's Pro tier (0% transaction fee) can beat a flat 10%, since the monthly cost is spread across many sales.

The decision is really “do I sell enough that a fixed monthly fee beats a flat percentage?” — a break-even calculation, not a single right answer.

Gumroad's Discover, Payhip's reach

One thing Payhip doesn't charge for is a marketplace. Gumroad's Discover adds an extra fee on sales it sources for you — so if discovery is part of why you chose Gumroad, your effective rate on those sales is higher than the flat 10%. With Payhip you bring your own traffic, but you also keep the full negotiated rate on every sale.
