How to Price on Gumroad So the 10% Fee Doesn't Kill Your Margin

Gumroad's fee structure — 10% + $0.50 per transaction — is simple, but it has a few non-obvious implications for how you should price. The $0.50 fixed component punishes low price points. The 30% Discover rate is a trap if you rely on it. And getting your floor price wrong means losing money on every sale without realising it. Here's the practical playbook.

Step 1 — Know your real floor price

Your floor price is the lowest number you can list at without losing money or wasting your time. On Gumroad, the fee is deducted from your payout, so you have to price above your costs and the fee. The formula:

Floor price = (your costs + minimum profit) ÷ 0.90 + $0.56

The ÷ 0.90 grosses up for the 10%, and the +$0.56 covers the $0.50 fixed fee (with a small buffer for rounding). Or just use the free calculator — enter your cost and desired net, and it shows the minimum list price.

Example: you made a template that took 10 hours to build. You value your time at $50/hour and want to recover at least $100 from each sale, with a $30 minimum profit. Your costs are $100, your minimum net is $130. Floor price = $130 ÷ 0.90 + $0.56 ≈ $145. List below that and you don't clear your floor. List above it and every dollar over is profit.

Step 2 — Avoid the low-price trap

The $0.50 fixed fee makes a meaningful difference at low price points:

List priceFeeYou keepEffective Gumroad rate
$5$1.00$4.0020.0%
$9$1.40$7.6015.6%
$19$2.40$16.6012.6%
$29$3.40$25.6011.7%
$49$5.40$43.6011.0%
$99$10.40$88.6010.5%

Notice the cliff between $5 (20% effective rate) and $19 (12.6%). If you're pricing below $15, the fixed fee is eating an outsized share of your revenue. The practical guidance: price above $19 if at all possible. If your product genuinely warrants a $5–$9 price, at least understand you're leaving 15–20% on the table, not 10%.

Step 3 — Build your own distribution, don't rely on Discover

Gumroad's Discover marketplace can surface your product to buyers browsing by category. The catch: any sale through Discover costs you 30%instead of 10% + $0.50. That's three times the standard rate.

On a $49 product:Direct sale → you keep $43.60. Discover sale → you keep $34.30. That's $9.30 less per sale, every time a Discover buyer converts.

Discover traffic feels "free" because you didn't pay for an ad. But you're paying for it at checkout — a 20-percentage-point premium over your standard rate. The fix is to invest in your own distribution so buyers arrive through your links: newsletter, content, social, direct outreach. Buyers who come through your direct URL pay the standard 10% + $0.50, not the Discover premium.

Step 4 — Use price anchoring to lift the average

Gumroad supports multiple price tiers within a single product and pay-what-you-want floors. Use them:

The "good, better, best" tier structure

Offer your core product at $29, an expanded version with bonus materials at $59, and a "complete bundle" at $99. Most buyers choose the middle tier — anchoring your $29 against $99 makes $59 look reasonable. Without the top tier, $59 is your ceiling and it's harder to justify.

Community pricing

If you have an audience that loves supporting creators, offer a "supporter" tier ($10–$20 above your standard price) with a small extra like a shoutout or early access. The marginal effort is low and the higher ticket improves your net without increasing your production cost.

Pay-what-you-want with a sensible floor

PWYW works for lead magnets and community tools. Always set a minimum — $5 at the very least, $9 or $12 if you want the economics to make sense after the $0.50 fixed fee. PWYW with a $0 minimum produces a lot of $0 and $1 downloads that don't help your income.

Step 5 — Factor the fee into every discount you offer

When you run a sale or offer a coupon code, the discount comes out of your payout — not Gumroad's cut. Gumroad's 10% applies to the discounted price, so you bear more of the discount burden than you might expect.

Example: you normally sell at $49 and offer a 20% discount code, bringing the price to $39.20. Gumroad takes 10% + $0.50 on $39.20 = $4.42. You net $34.78 — vs $43.60 at full price. A 20% discount reduced your net by 20.2%, not 20%. Small difference, but it compounds if you discount frequently. Price your "sale price" so the net after the discount and fee still clears your floor.

FAQ

What price should I charge on Gumroad to make $X?

Work backwards from your target net: if you want $25 in hand, divide by 0.90 and then add $0.56 to cover the fixed fee. That gives you roughly $28.39 as the minimum list price. Or: enter your target net into the free Gumroad Fee Calculator and it shows you the required list price instantly.

Why should I avoid pricing below $10 on Gumroad?

The $0.50 fixed fee hits hardest on low prices. At $5, that fixed $0.50 is 10% on its own — combined with Gumroad's 10% percentage, you're losing 20% of the sale price before you even account for your production costs. At $19 the fixed fee is only 2.6% of the sale, making the effective rate much closer to the headline 10%.

What is the Gumroad Discover trap and how do I avoid it?

If a buyer discovers your product through Gumroad's Discover marketplace, Gumroad charges you 30% instead of 10% + $0.50. The trap is assuming Discover will drive meaningful revenue: you can't control the 30% rate when a Discover buyer converts. The fix is to build your own distribution (newsletter, social, content) so buyers arrive through your direct links, not Discover.

Should I use Gumroad's pay-what-you-want pricing?

Pay-what-you-want (PWYW) can work for lead generation or community building, but it's risky for income. Many buyers pay the minimum. Because Gumroad's $0.50 fixed fee applies to every transaction, tiny payments lose a large percentage. If you use PWYW, set the minimum at $5 or higher to make the fixed fee less punishing.

The bottom line on Gumroad pricing

Gumroad's 10% + $0.50 is simple — once you internalise the two things that aren't obvious: the fixed fee punishes low prices, and Discover traffic costs three times more than your standard rate. Price above $19, build your own distribution so buyers use your links, know your floor before you publish, and always check discounts against the net — not the headline price.
